Oceansrespect is more than an eco-responsible company, it's a movement!
So we take care of ourselves and we take every opportunity to do the same for the environment.
We are aware of what we put into our bodies and the weight our modern lives place on the planet.
For some time now, we have replaced plastic with glass, steel or bamboo, plastic carrier bags with cotton shopping bags, and we have replaced kitchen products such as plastic wrap and cleaners. by waxed papers and homemade concoctions of baking soda and white vinegar.
Today we would like to share with you one of our favorite recipes:
Our 100% natural toothpaste to make yourself at home!
Our toothpaste is free from ingredients commonly found in commercial toothpastes such as aspartame, parabens and detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate, and of course the inevitable plastic tubes.
Did we mention the recipe is super simple, easy to make, and only uses 3 ingredients?
To make the toothpaste you will need:
- 1/4 cup baking soda.
- Some water.
- A few drops of peppermint, spearmint, or other essential oil of your choice for flavor.
- A small sterilized glass jar (sterilize by placing your clean, still-moist jar in the microwave on full power for about 45 seconds).
- Stevia (not required but useful if you can't adapt to the taste).
Manufacturing steps:
- Place the baking soda in the jar and slowly add water until it forms a paste, thin enough to coat your toothbrush, thick enough to stick.
- Add a few drops of essential oil to taste and mix well. If you think you might not be able to adjust to the taste, you can add a small amount of stevia (1/4 tsp) to make it more flavorful.
- You will need to stir the dough each time before using it.
So ! You have made your own 100% natural, zero waste toothpaste!
A word of warning :
As great as this recipe is (we've been using it for years), there are a few downsides to brushing with baking soda:
- The abrasiveness of baking soda can damage enamel over time, so check with your dentist first to see if it is safe to use.
- Do not use if you wear braces as the material may react with baking soda and cause discoloration.
That said, this recipe is simple and effective. Try it and your teeth will be clean and your mouth fresh.
